When it comes to eye appeal, a fresh remodel always trumps a tired bath with worn-out fixtures. The key is to keep it simple. As you plan your project, don't lose sight of resale value. At some point you may sell your home, and an upgraded bathroom might add to the selling price. You can replace worn out or dated fixtures with new reproduction to maintain the integrity of the home's style. Water stains, chipped countertops, missing porcelain, and rust on tubs and sinks are indications that it's time to refurbish or make repairs.
Consider the faucets in the tub/shower area and the washbasin. If they are out of style, leaking, hard to use, or just plain worn out, then it's probably time for a change. You can purchase a quality faucet for the washbasin for the price of two visits from a plumber.
If you have a wooden window in the shower area and decide that you really need one there consider replacing it with an aluminium or vinyl window, which is less prone to water damage. If you're just looking to bring in light, think about a skylight, or acrylic or glass blocks placed high in the wall.
Consider replacing your vanity cabinet with one that's prebuilt or even custom made. Now is also the time to evaluate your medicine cabinet (if you have one) and the mirror. Medicine cabinets can be mounted on the wall or recessed into the stud cavity. Recessing requires some planning, but it alone can change the overall look of your bathroom.
When people enter a room, they normally form their first impression by looking at the floor, so carefully evaluate yours. Even if you feel there's nothing wrong with it, it's most likely outdated.
I've given you a lot to consider. If you're feeling overwhelmed, consult a design professional.
